E-Ink Tablets Are Slow on Purpose, and That's the Point

I bought an e-ink writing tablet expecting to return it. The refresh rate is sluggish, there is no color, and web browsing is a joke. Six weeks later it is the device I reach for most during working hours.

The constraint is the feature. Because the screen cannot comfortably show video or a busy app feed, it never tempts me into the scroll. It does two things well, reading long documents and handwriting notes, and it does nothing else at all. That narrowness is precisely what my attention needed.

There is a genuine engineering trade underneath the vibe. E-ink draws power only when the image changes, so a single charge lasts weeks, and reflective displays are easy on the eyes in daylight where glossy tablets wash out. You pay for that with grayscale and lag.

A device that does less can protect the thing every other screen is competing for: your focus.

I am not claiming everyone needs one. But if your tablet has quietly become a distraction machine, a slower screen might be the honest fix that a productivity app never was.
